Winnipeg Parks & Gardens

Established in 1904 as a 283-acre park, Assiniboine Park has grown to include the Assiniboine Forest and is also home to the Assiniboine Park Zoo, formal and informal gardens, the historic Assiniboine Park Pavilion, a conservatory, a performing arts venue and a gallery. A popular family destination, the park also includes traditional features such as walking and cycling trails, playgrounds, a duck pond and plenty of scenic picnic areas.

Spread out over a total of 194 ha (480 acres) and with 36. 4 ha (90 acres) already in use, the Red River Exhibition Park is a multi-purpose facility where a number of popular events are held each year including the Red River Exhibition. The park and its facilities can be rented for special events and occasion.

This provincial park north of Winnipeg offers a number of activities. Featuring Kingfisher Lake, which can be used for swimming and boating, there is also a network of trails that visitors can walk, cycle or horseback ride in the summer, and snowmobile and cross-country ski in winter. The park, which is home to the Winnipeg Folk Festival, contains a number of picnic areas and campgrounds.

St. Vital Park, in the south of Winnipeg, runs along the east shore of the Red River. The park offers plenty of green space and trails running along the river. Close to shopping and dining in St. Vital.

A rural oasis inside the city, Fort Whyte offers more than 600 acres of aspen forest and tall grass prairie. When snow falls you can use snowshoes to trek the trails and visit the bison or try your luck ice fishing on Lake Devonian. The interpretive centre includes a Touch Museum and Aquarium of the Prairies. Dec 5: Father Christmas In the Forest. Have your picture taken with St. Nick from noon-3 pm ($5).
